“If any one comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”
Excerpt, Gospel Reading, Wednesday 6th Nov. 2024 – LUKE 14:25-33.
So, does it really mean that Christ is asking us to hate wife, children and parents, even ourselves if we must be his disciples?
Well, so, it does seems. But far be it from that. Jesus Christ is not asking us to hate any of these people.
Do we remember what St Paul says in today’s first reading- “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling. . . . . . .” – PHILIPPIANS 2:12-18.
Salvation is an individual race. Therefore, no matter how much we love our family, we yet must run that race as individuals.
Since it is very important that we must travel light, Christ enjoins us to cast away other people’s burden (irrespective of family affiliation), carry our individual cross and follow him.
Dear friend, wife, husband, child / children, parents, siblings or excessive love for one’s self mustn’t stand in our way of making heaven.
May God avail us the grace to allow His will to be realised in our life.
Have a fantastic day folks.
